The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde - IfL) pursues original research on the regional geography of Germany and Europe and publishes regional geographical information for a broad readership. The Institute is supported by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Sachsen. The IfL is a member of the Leibniz Association and the only non-university research institute for geography in Germany.
Overall research issues are the restructuring of European states, their integration into supranational units as well as economic and social differentiation. The aim is to record the spatial aspects of such processes and to analyse and evaluate the development of convergences and divergences in European spatial development. To this end the Institute employs a European-wide comparative approach while focussing its research on Eastern Europe. Further important fields of research include regional geographical studies in Germany and the theoretical and historical context of regional geography.
The IfL provides descriptive and multivariate analyses of unbalanced sex ratio structures and sex-selective migration in the EU- and EFTA-states on the regional level (NUTS2/NUTS3) for SEMIGRA (see report General Anlysis). On the regional level, the IfL is in charge for the case study region Sachsen-Anhalt). Policy advice on how to deal with sex-selective migration and with regard to the specific needs and expectations of young women and men living in rural parts of Sachsen Anhalt is provided in close co-operation with the Ministry for Regional Development and Transport Sachsen-Anhalt (DE).
