The University of Oulu is an international research and innovation university engaged in multidisciplinary basic research and academic education. The University of Oulu, established in 1958, is one of the largest universities in Finland with an exceptionally wide academic base. Internationally pioneering research is conducted as a collaboration of different disciplines. The University encompasses eight fields of study: Humanities, Education, Economics and Business, Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences, and Technology. In all, more than 70 different specialist disciplines are represented. The fields of information technology, biotechnology, northern and environmental issues have been defined as special research focus areas.
Kajaani University Consortium is one of the six University Consortiums in Finland that started in the beginning of 2004. Kajaani University Consortium is a concentration of know-how formed by the university activities in Kainuu. In the University Consortium, co-operation is done with the Universities of Eastern Finland, Jyväskylä and Lapland, co-ordinated by the University of Oulu. The objective of Kajaani University Consortium is to improve the knowledge-level of the area, and its well-being, competitiveness and university culture, by means of a customer oriented approach in fields of research, education and development.
Adult and Continuing Education AIKOPA consists of the education service of Kajaani University for Applied Sciences and continuing education of University of Oulu. AIKOPA offers education, development and expert services. In AIKOPA research group evaluation study has been conducted since 1995 and regional research since 1981. The fields of expertise are programme and project evaluation, regional research as well as rural development.
On the regional level in SEMIGRA, AIKOPA is in charge for the case study region Kainuu. Policy advice on how to deal with sex-selective migration and with regard to the specific needs and expectations of young women and men living in rural parts of Kainuu is provided in close co-operation the Joint Authority of Kainuu Region (FI).
